Affine transformations and Lie algebroids

The work of Kentaro Yano on the Lie derivative nearly sixty years ago was important in establishing the properties of infinitesimal symmetries of various types of geometric object, in particular of spaces with an affine connection. In this talk I shall discuss an approach to this problem using Lie groupoids of affine maps, and I shall show how the associated Lie algebroids may usefully be represented using a particular type of projectable vector field. This work is part of a larger project on Cartan geometries being undertaken jointly with Mike Crampin.
